Day 3 in Shimane: Local Delicacies and Reflections on Regional Vitality

On the morning of the third day, the skies over Matsue in Shimane Prefecture were clear and bright. A gentle breeze made it the perfect start to the final day of the trip.

Our hotel included breakfast, and as expected, it was delicious. It was a buffet-style spread filled with Shimane’s local specialties.

There was shijimi clam soup, shijimi rice, classic wariko soba, grilled nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), and akaten—a red tempura made with local fish paste. Though I tried to stick to a vegetable-heavy plate, I couldn’t resist sampling everything.

After enjoying a coffee, I returned to my room feeling completely satisfied both in body and spirit.

Morning Meetings and Thoughts About the Region’s Future

That morning, I attended two meetings focused on employment trends and the growing movement of people returning to their hometowns (UI-turns) in the Matsue area.

To revitalize rural regions, people are essential. I understand the appeal cities hold for young people, but if more of them choose to return someday, the future of these local communities will be brighter.

It was a moment that reaffirmed that hopeful possibility.

Afternoon: Heading Home

After finishing work in the morning, I took a bus to Izumo Airport. The ride offered a beautiful view of Lake Shinji.

The bus from Matsue Station to the airport costs 1,300 yen. If you use an IC card, just tap on and off—very convenient.

The ride took about 35 minutes without any traffic. We arrived at the airport in no time.

My flight was bound for Chubu Centrair International Airport. It was a short 45-minute flight.

Looking out from the airport window, the sky was just as clear as when I arrived, though now with a tinge of farewell. I reflected on the three days I spent in Shimane and felt grateful that everything went smoothly.

The nature, food, people, and way of life rooted in the land of Shimane left a strong impression on me. Though short, the trip was filled with warmth and learning.

I hope to visit again someday.
