Mitsuishi Shrine and a Spring Breeze Ride — Small Discoveries on the Shimohisakata Beginner Cycling Route

Refreshing Spring Cycling Before Golden Week

Cycling in the gentle spring breeze is the perfect way to refresh both body and mind.
What started as a health routine has now turned into something I genuinely look forward to—finding small, beautiful discoveries along the way.
This time, I was tempted by the great weekend weather to ride the beginner cycling route in Shimohisakata, Iida City, Nagano Prefecture.

While pedaling through the scenic beginner route around Shimohisakata, I encountered two memorable spots:
Mitsuishi Shrine and Joshin Zen Temple.

The first stop was Mitsuishi Shrine, where massive sacred stones are enshrined.
The peaceful grounds, moss-covered rocks, and rays of sunlight filtering through the trees made me stop my bike and simply take it all in.

Shimohisakata Beginner Route

Though it’s called a “beginner” course, the Shimohisakata route still offers gentle slopes and rich natural scenery.
It’s ideal for those new to cycling—challenging enough to feel rewarding but not overwhelming. Perfect for anyone looking to stay active while enjoying the outdoors.

[Mitsuishi Shrine]

My first stop was Mitsuishi Shrine, famous for its three massive sacred stones.
Standing quietly among the trees, the shrine gave off a powerful, calming energy.

The harmony between the moss-covered stones and the wooden shrine buildings created a timeless, almost sacred atmosphere.
It felt as though time had slowed down just for this moment.

Mitsuishi Shrine seems to have been quietly protected and cherished by the local people over the years.
It’s been a site of spiritual significance for generations, and even today, it holds a steady, comforting presence.

Being able to drop by a place like this on a whim is one of the real joys of cycling.
It gave me a quiet moment away from daily life—a chance to reconnect with something deeper.

Exercising for my health has become even more meaningful when it leads me to places of cultural and natural beauty.

[Joshin Zen Temple]

Next, I came across Joshin Zen Temple nestled in a quiet mountain area.
A grand stone monument, an elegant gate, and a carefully tended garden made it stand out.

There was a serene, almost sacred atmosphere unique to Zen temples.
The moment I passed through the gate, I felt a sense of calm settle over me.

[A Peaceful Day, A Quiet Journey]

The weather on the day of my visit was perfect—blue skies, white walls, and the fresh green of the surrounding trees created a stunning contrast.

The beautifully maintained garden and the trees around the temple gave me a deep sense of peace—
It felt like a “small spiritual journey.”

Once again, I was reminded how special it is to experience places like this, something rarely felt in daily life.
Cycling lets you wander into these hidden gems freely and naturally.

[Closing Thoughts & Message to Readers]

Gentle slopes, quiet nature, and landscapes full of history—this cycling trip was not just exercise for my body,
but also a refreshing breath for my soul.
